“The cultural experience
Dedicated in 1957, the Irish Nationality Room is a replica of a 12th-century Oratory, a place of worship and celebration of Mass other than a parish church.
The room includes a replica of the Book of Kells, a magnificently illuminated collection of the four gospels. Three stained-glass windows honor teachers: St. Finnian of Clonard, St. Columbkille of Derry and St. Carthach of Lismore.
A virtual tour offering close-ups and detailed explanations can be found at nationalityrooms.pitt.edu.
The University of Pittsburgh’s Nationality Rooms are in the Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. They are open during fall and spring terms from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (last tour) Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays.
